General
Q: Can I drink when wearing my respirator?
A: Yes, with the exception of Avon PC50 respirator variants, which are not fitted with a drinking system. Canteen caps with Avon drink couplers are available that fit to standard water canteens. These allow fail safe connection to the integral hydration tube on the respirator (a variety of caps are available for in-service canteens).
Avon Protection also offer the CBR50i Chem Bio Reservoir as an additional accessory which is engineered to integrate with suitable Avon Protection respirators without the need for cumbersome adaptors. The CBR50i provides up to 3 litres of safe drinking water enabling the wearer to operate for long periods of time whilst wearing full CBRN protection clothing.

Q: Can I use detergents to clean the respirator?
A: No, do not use detergent, spirit or solvent cleaner. Immerse the face respirator in warm water containing a dilute Hibitane solution (1/2000 dilution of a 5% solution is normal), or a mild, baby-type, non-allergic soap solution. Rinse the respirator in clean water and allow to air dry.

Q: What filter canister should I use with my respirator?
A: Always select a filter canister suitable for the contaminant(s) known to be present or likely to be encountered in the atmosphere.
In atmospheres where a threat from CBRN agents may be encountered, the respirator must be used in conjunction with a suitable CBRN filter canister capable of appropriate protection from these agents. In conventional non-CBRN situations, European legislation requires that the respirator be used with CE marked, type-approved filter canisters suitable for the application. In the USA, only the filter canister that is NIOSH system approved with an appropriate respirator may be used.
Failure to choose a suitable filter canister may result in the respirator providing inadequate protection from the contaminated atmosphere, leading to serious bodily injury or death.

Q: Can I wear glasses whilst wearing my Avon respirator?
A: You can only wear special prescription lens systems designed especially for the respirator. You cannot wear spectacles with side arms, because you will break the protective face seal.
With the C50/ FM50 and FM53 the Vision Correction System enables prescription lenses to be mounted inside the respirator. Contact Avon for details on how to obtain prescription lenses for the Vision Correction Systems (Customer Services: +44(0) 1225 896705).

Q: How do I know whether I need a left handed or right handed respirator?
A: If you are a right handed shooter you will need a right handed respirator, this means that the filter canister will mount on the left hand side.
B: If you choose a Twin Port respirator such as a C50, this is user configurable to either left or right hand.

Q: What is the purpose of the additional Outserts for the 50 series respirators?
• A: A clear outsert assembly is available for general use. It enhances protection of the visor against scratches and impact from high velocity particles.
• A sunlight outsert assembly is available for high UV environments.
• A blueblocker outsert assembly is available for reducing glare during firearms use.
• A laser outsert assembly is available affording protection from laser energy.
• A breach outsert assembly (shade 5) is available, providing protection when operating thermal cutting or allied equipment.

Q: How do I dispose of my Avon Respirator?
A: If the respirator is exposed to CBRN or chemical warfare agents, special decontamination and disposal procedures outlined by local and or national guidelines must be followed.

A: Old Uncontaminated Filters: Safe to dispose via landfill

Q: Can I use a second-hand Avon respirator that I buy in Military Equipment shops?
A: No, Avon does not condone the purchase and use of second hand respirators. Avon accept no responsibility for any respirator purchased outside of their approved distributor network.
Purchase through unauthorised agencies is in direct contravention of the legislation governing these products. Avon S10 and FM12 respirators are UK restricted products and as such their use and application are controlled by The UK Government. They are CBRN military and law enforcement products only.
The use of respirators outside of military and law enforcement applications is controlled by European PPE Regulations in the EU and by NIOSH regulations in USA. Only the FM12, C50, FM53 and FM54 respirator variants are type approved through CE Marking for non-military or law enforcement applications in Europe. All other variants are for military use only. Only the FM12, C50, PC50, FM53 and FM54 variants are NIOSH approved in the USA.
Some Avon respirators are ITAR restricted products and as such their use and application are controlled by the US Department of Defence.

Q: How should I dispose of batteries from an Avon Protection product?
A: In the UK:
As a manufacturer of industrial battery packs under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, Avon Polymer Products supply Tenergy / Heter 18650, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4), Nickel Metal-Hydride (Ni-MH) battery packs. Avon are obliged to accept free of charge, waste industrial batteries previously supplied by the business to an end user for treatment and recycling. Avon are required to do this in any calendar year where the placement of new industrial batteries on the market has taken place. NH15 Emergency Hood

Q: Can I use the NH15 emergency hood in a fire?
A: No, Avon escape hoods are not designed for escape from fire, they offer protection against a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threats only. Under these circumstances you would require PPE providing breathable air, or a filter designed to protect against carbon monoxide, i.e. self-contained breathing apparatus as worn by Fire fighters, or a specifically designed smoke hood.

Q: What does ‘do not use in an oxygen deficient atmosphere’ mean?
A: The NH15 is not designed to be used in an incident where there is limited or no oxygen e.g. a fire. We define oxygen deficient as being an atmosphere containing less than 19.5% O2. When you breathe wearing the hood, the NH15 filters work by drawing air through the filter removing atmospheric contaminants. If there is no oxygen in the air passing through the filter then you will asphyxiate.

Q: Can the NH15 emergency hood be re-used?
A: No, once opened the NH15 is designed to be a single use hood.

Q: .What level of protection do the filters provide?
A: The filters provide protection against gases, vapours and particulate materials, including biological agents up to the same level as a military gas respirator. The protection against gases and vapours is limited to the most common threat agents, including nerve gas and mustard as defined by NIOSH. The capacity of the gas filter is sufficient to allow you 15 minutes of wear time.

Q: Does the NH15 come in various sizes?
A: Yes, the NH15 is available in three sizes covering neck sizes from 30cm (12”) to 55cm (22”) circumference.


FM12
Q: How many sizes are the FM12 available?
A: There are three sizes available with a six buckle fit allowing quick donning:
Size 1 – Large
Size 2 – Medium
Size 3 – Small
Some FM12 variants have a twin-port configuration that allows the filter to be installed on either side of the respirator.

Q: How do I make sure I have the right size of FM12?
A: Avon can provide you with a sizing tool which helps to determine the correct size of respirator. Also, as a rule of thumb, your eyes should be at, or just above, the centre line of the eye lenses.
Wearers must always conduct a negative pressure fit check prior to use to make sure the respirator will seal to the face. Q: How many sizes are the C50 available?
A: The respirator is available in three sizes, L (Large), M (Medium), S (Small).

The FM54 also has an enhanced, robust lever located on the VREU (Variable Resistance Exhalation Unit), which switches mode from positive to negative pressure without removal of optional VPU (Voice Projection Unit) or loss of protection.

Q: What is the storage life of the FM54?
A: Safe storage of the face respirator is vitally important: It should be stored in a clean and dry environment, ideally within the temperature and relative humidity limits of 20 ºC ± 10 ºC, <80% RH. It should not be stored or transported under heavy or sharp objects. It should not be stored or transported where it could be exposed to extremes of temperatures or direct sunlight. The original packaging should be retained and used for transportation. The respirator and all its components have a storage life of ten years.

Q: How can the FM54 respirator switch between operating modes?
A: The FM54 APR makes use of a Variable resistance exhalation unit (VREU). This contains the exhale positive pressure module which allows the respirator the operational flexibility to be used in APR (Negative Pressure) or SCBA (Positive Pressure) modes.

Q: Can I use communications systems with the FM54?
A: The FM54 has an electronic communications port (ECP) for voice amplification and an electronic pass-through for external radio use. Avon Protection offer an optional low profile voice projection unit with internal microphone which provides clear communication while wearing the mas.

 

HM50 & HMK150
Q: How many size combinations are available?
A: Avon HM50 comes in three sizes (Small Medium & Large)
The Schubert helmet is available in three shell sizes (Small Medium & Large) with the option of eleven internal liner sizes.


Q: What is the HMK150?
A: Avon has teamed with Schuberth to provide flawless integration of their HM50 respirator and Exoskeleton, to the Schuberth P100N Helmet. Supplied with the HM50 is an HMK150 Conversion Pack which allows the user to configure the respirator for helmet attachment mode. In this configuration it is referred to as the HMK150.

Based on the widely deployed 50 Series respirator platform, the HM50 system brings the pedigree of a respirator proven for use in the harshest environments and is type-examination approved for CE marking with CBRN Protection. Through a simple exchange of the harness for the helmet connecting straps, the respirator converts to be compatible with a world leading Police helmet for use in non-CBRN environments which is approved to the most advanced German Police specification.
The full face respirator is connected to the helmet in seconds and as there is no need for the helmet to be removed, respiratory protection is seamless.

Q: Can HM50 be used in conjunction with any other helmet manufacturer?
A: The current design fits exclusively to the Schuberth P100N Riot helmet

Q: Can an Avon C50 respirator be re-configured into a HMK50?
A: No, this would invalidate the type-examination approval of the HM50 full face respirator. The configuration of an HM50 full face respirator requires a considerable amount of specialist work, which may only be completed by Avon Protection. As a result it is more cost effective to buy a new HM50 rather than convert a 50 series variant. All manufacturing and testing operations require the specialist tooling and test equipment held at Avon sites.

Q. Can customers purchase the helmet and respirator separately?
A: Yes the respirator and helmet could be purchased separately.


PC50
Q: How many respirator sizes are available?
A: The PC50 is an easily adjustable 6 point head harness and is available in small, medium and large sizes that will accommodate approximately 98% of the wearer population.

Q: Is the PC50 a CBRN respiratory respirator?
A: The Avon PC50 is designed and approved for use as a Non-CBRN respiratory device.

Q: Can I use communication systems with the PC50?
A: Even though by design the respirator will not accept a Voice Projection Unit, the standard communications port allows the ability to connect with existing radios.

ST53 & ST53SD
Q: What is the duration of the ST53?
A: The standard ST53 with full back frame offers 4.7 litre, 6.8 litre and 9 litre lightweight carbon cylinder options with 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes duration based on the NIOSH breathing rate of 24 respirations a minute at a minute volume of 40 litres. The ST53SD offers 1.0 litre and 2.0 litre cylinder options with 7 minutes and 14 minutes duration based on the NIOSH breathing rate of 24 respirations a minute at a minute volume of 40 litres.

Q: Can the ST53 be used with any other supplier’s respirator?
A: The ST53 is only approved for use with the FM53 face respirator from Avon Protection.

Q: What makes AvonAir family of products different to other powered air offerings?
A: The modular components of the AvonAir products can be con¬figured into a Low Flow Powered Respirator, high Flow PAPR or Combination PAPR/SCBA. Benefits include:

It is tested and approved at NIOSH as an APR and has had some additional tests with the blower turned on. It meets most re¬quirements of a PAPR with a key exception being flow rate.
Lower airflow is suitable for low metabolic rate activities only.

Q: What is the operational run time of Avon EZAIR from each battery pack?
A: The operational run time with the 1400 batteries is more than 4 hours. The operational run time with the 2600 batteries is more than 8 hours.


Q: What replaceable batteries does the Avon EZAir use, do I need to buy a certain brand?
A: The Avon EZAir uses 4x CR123 batteries. The approved brands of battery are the Energizer EL123 or Duracell DL123.

Q: What is the life of Avon EZAIR?
A: The life of Avon EZAir is 10 years, which is extended to 20 years with proper maintenance and service.

Q: How quiet is Avon EZAIR in operation?
A: The Avon EZAir is approximately 55 dBA measured at the ears with a waist mounted blower.

Q: What does Avon EZAir protect against?

Q: Can I fit the Avon EZAIR directly to my respirator without a hose?
A: No, you should not fit the Avon EZAir to the respirator without a hose, as this will put too much weight in the face seal.

Q: Can I use a large capacity battery pack from the MP-PAPR with Avon EZAIR?
A: Yes; but this should be avoided as it will be a non-approved configuration. It is also not compatible with the Avon harness system.

 

MP-PAPR
Q: What benefits does an MP-PAPR provide the wearer?
A: The benefits of the MP-PAPR include:
• Comfortable to wear
• Reduced thermal stress
• Reduced breathing burden for high metabolic rate activities
• Extra comfort of blown air into the face piece
• Improved protection factor over Avon EZAir

Q: Does the MP-PAPR use the same Avon EZAIR unit?
A: Yes, the MP-PAPR uses the same Avon EZAir unit however; larger batteries are required to run the higher-powered MP-PAPR system.

Q: Why wear an MP-PAPR over an Avon EZAir for protection?
A: The MP-PAPR enables use during high metabolic rate activities. It also provides an improved protection factor. Approx. 2000 in¬creases to 10,000 (note: PF as measured by Avon differs to OSHA Assigned Protection Factor).

Q: Why does the MP-PAPR have a flexible body and not a rigid plastic body like other PAPRs?
A: The flexible body of the MP-PAPR provides excellent shock re¬sistance, multiple wear positions, allows the PAPR to conform to the body, is low profile, comfortable and distributes the weight on the user.

Q: Can I add modules to the MP-PAPR to make it a CS-PAPR?
A: Yes, a combination hose, harness and positive pressure enabled respirator are required to make an MP-PAPR into a CS-PAPR.

Q: What is the operational run time of MP-PAPR from each battery pack?
A: The operational run time of an MP-PAPR with 2800 batteries are more than 4 hours. The 5200 batteries have a run time of more than 8 hours with the MP-PAPR.

Q: What respirators are MP-PAPR approved for use with?
A: The MP-PAPR is currently approved for use with the C50, FM53 and FM54 APRs.

Q: Can other manufacturer’s filters fit on the MP-PAPR?
A: It is not recommended – only in emergencies; any NATO RD40 thread will connect but this should be avoided as the configuration would not hold a NIOSH approval and some system functionality may be lost.

Q: Is the MP-PAPR flame hardened, can I use this in a fire situation?
A: The MP-PAPR meets EN 12942 Heat & Flame. The MP-PAPR is not for use as a firefighting respirator.

CS-PAPR

Q: What benefits does a CS-PAPR with SCBA provide the wearer?
A: The benefits of a CS-PAPR with SCBA include:
• Rapid switch between APR, PAPR and SCBA
• Highest protection factor with a face piece system when in SCBA mode
• Maximum time on target with SCBA protection
• Can deconstruct into MP-PAPR or Avon EZAir system
• Reduced thermal stress

Q: What happens if I run out of SCBA air?
A: The system will always default to APR mode when SCBA air or PAPR mode is diminished.

Q: What respirators are approved with the CS-PAPR?
A: The FM53 and FM54 APRs are approved with the CS-PAPR.

Q: Can other manufacturer’s filters fit on the CS-PAPR?
A: Yes, however, by using other manufacturer’s filters the CS-PAPR will no longer be an approved system. This should be avoided, as approvals are filter specific to Avon and safety cannot be guaranteed.

NH15 Combo
Q: What are the main differences between the NH15 and NH15 Combo Hoods?
A: The NH15 Combo hood has additional filtering capability protecting the wearer from carbon monoxide.

ST50
Q: What durations of cylinders are available?
A: 2216psi 30 minutes, and 4500 psi 30, 45 & 60 minute carbon cylinders.

Q: What is the life of the compressed air cylinders?
A: The ST50 is offered with a range of DOT certified carbon cylinders all of which have a 15 year life span and require hydro-testing only every 5 years.


MCM100

Q: What is a rebreather?
A: The term ‘rebreather’ refers to breathing apparatus, generally used for diving, designed to absorb the Carbon Dioxide of a user's exhaled breath, facilitating reuse of both the substantially unused Oxygen content and unused inert content when present, in each respiration. To compensate Oxygen lost when metabolised by the user, additional Oxygen is introduced to the breathing loop automatically when required.To enable life support, all modern rebreathers share certain basic components, which include:
1. A mouthpiece connected to two breathing hoses (one for inhaled gas, the other for exhaled gas) commonly referred to as the “breathing loop”;
2. A system for adding oxygen to the breathing loop either mechanically or electronically on a replenishment requirement basis;
3. A system for removing exhaled CO2 from the breathing loop, typically of a soda lime CO2 absorbent canister (sometimes referred to as a ‘scrubber’); and
4. A collapsible gas bag or ‘counter-lung’”.
5. An Oxygen gas supply cylinder and a Nitrox or Trimix set referred to as a diluent gas supply cylinder.

Q: What is the difference between an oxygen rebreather, a closed circuit and semi-closed circuit rebreather and open circuit?
A: The fundamental differences between the three kinds of rebreathers are the way in which they add gas to the breathing loop, and the control of the concentration of oxygen in the breathing gas. A semi-closed circuit set will exhaust small qualities of excess gas that may build up through pressure change (ascending). 

A closed circuit set retains all the gas in the breathing loop and does not exhaust any gas from the system.
An Open-circuit diving set involves breathing directly from a compressed air or gas cylinder through a single stage and second stage demand valve. All of the exhaust gas is exhausted from the system via the diver’s mouthpiece into the water, giving off bubbles of gas, which for a covert military diver would risk compromise.

 
Q: What are the hazards associated with rebreathers?
A: As will all rebreathers there is an explosive hazard associated with carrying flammable compressed gas, in particular pure oxygen. Cleanliness and avoiding contact with petroleum-based oils and greases is of course a necessity. Perishable rubber materials may fail if not properly maintained and an ingress of water into the breathing loop may affordthe potential for respiratory burn . Avon Protection mitigate these risks through expert advice on effective maintenance schedules the use of high quality parts and materials in our equipment and significant safety feature design. All Avon Protection Rebreathers are designed, built and accredited to internationally recognized standards.

Q: What fail-safe systems does the MCM100 have?
A: All products designs undergo a full Failure Mode Analysis which highlights where critical subsystems or major components should have redundancy. All products have built in safety features to cope with equipment malfunctions, i.e. the diver can still operate the diving set, even when the main power source is down. These features have been built into our equipment through research and knowledge of working in low visibility confined spaces for extended periods of time.

Q: Is an export licence required for Mi-TIC cameras?
A: They are classified as dual-use technology and can be shipped under an open export licence to many countries worldwide. Where an export licence is required, this can usually be granted within 4-6 weeks.

Q: What warranty do I get with the MI-TIC cameras?
A: We offer a market leading 5 years on cameras, 5 years on batteries and 10 years on sensor and lens for the Mi-TIC 320 and the Mi-TIC S.

Q: What is the Ignis Engine?
A: The Ignis engine is the name given to the new technology forming the thermal core in the argus range of thermal imaging cameras. The Ignis engine is comprised of the infrared sensor, the focussing lens and the proprietary electronics and image processing software.

Our engineers have made imaging performance improvements through changes to the sensor and lens components. These improvements give unrivalled background detail to ensure the firefighter can always identify even low contrast objects such as casualties or exit points.

Q: What product approvals do the new Mi-TIC camera models hold?
A: All models are approved for CE marking as well as Class I, Div.2 , & Class II Div.2 use in hazardous locations and NFPA1801 Standard on Thermal Imagers for the Fire Service. The key difference between the old and the new models being, that the new models have NFPA1801:2018 certification whereas the old models were approved to the previous revision NFPA1801:2013.

Q: Does the Ignis engine come as standard on all camera models?
A: Yes. All Mi-TIC E, Mi-TIC EL, Mi-TIC 320 and Mi-TIC S models now contain the Ignis engine.

Q: Are 1 or 3 button cameras still available?
A: Yes. The Mi-TIC E and Mi-TIC E L models are available in 1 or 3 button variants.
