MATERIALS INNOVATION

Our Materials Innovation team develops and tests materials for new products. They ensure standards are met, supporting production and our product range. We offer material development services to industries.

Avon Protection's Materials Innovation experts lead materials development and characterization in support of new product development, as well as identify and investigate material technologies that may be relevant to future product applications. Our scientists conduct vigorous testing and analysis to ensure materials and products comply with international standards and customer specifications, offering essential support to production and contributing to the maintenance of our product portfolios.

Beyond supporting our own product development, our experts also provide material development, characterization and analysis services to external businesses from a broad range of industry sectors, helping them understand and improve material performance in real-life applications and manufacturing processes within our ISO 9001 accredited laboratory. This ensures we're up to date on cross-over technologies that are relevant to our own material development needs.

FAILURE ANALYSIS & SUPPORT

With our investment in state-of-the-art facilities and highly knowledgeable scientists, we can give you the answers you need. We offer a fast, cost-effective service for identifying and resolving failure issues associated with polymeric materials.

Whilst understanding that every failure is the result of a unique combination of factors, our wealth of experience and comprehensive understanding of material properties and the underlying mechanisms of degradation, such as aging, environmental stress cracking, adhesive failures, and manufacturing defects, allow us to pinpoint the origin of the issue. Beyond this, we can propose remedial solutions to improve product performance through corrective actions, material specification optimization, and custom compound development and testing.

SUSTAINABILITY

We are a leading organization in the understanding and characterization of materials from recycled and sustainable sources and can assist customers to increase their use by identifying opportunities and demonstrating the benefits of incorporating these materials into their rubber compounds. These materials include recovered Carbon Blacks (rCBs) and Silica (rSilica™) and other pyrolysis products, naturally derived materials, Carbon from Hydrogen generation, and devulcanized rubber.

Our team of experienced scientists and engineers is at the forefront of characterizing ingredients for use in rubber materials and collaborates internationally in helping to define material standards and test methods. Combined with an extensive knowledge of rubber chemistry and utilizing our comprehensive material characterization and small to batch-scale rubber mixing capabilities, we can identify opportunities for the use of sustainable materials and demonstrate the benefits of incorporating these materials into rubber components.

COMPOUND DEVELOPMENT

In Materials Innovation, we are proud to be continuing Avon Protection’s extraordinary history of rubber compound development. We have the expertise and capabilities to develop, mix, and test bespoke formulations to meet demanding customer requirements for a wide variety of applications. Our team can also work to develop formulations to meet targets for sustainable content or in response to changes in regulatory restrictions.

We can develop the best material for your application and processing requirements, giving you ownership of bespoke, application-specific formulation IP and enabling strategic sourcing of compounds for cost efficiency. Our development activities are supported by our well-equipped laboratory, which enables rapid throughput and scale-up of development formulations and confirmation that material performance will meet specification criteria.

MATERIAL & PRODUCT PERFORMANCE

We recognize that understanding the performance of materials is critical to effective product development, efficient manufacturing, and avoidance of in-service failure. Drawing on our extensive knowledge of polymeric materials and utilizing our well-equipped laboratory to undertake supporting physical and mechanical testing, we can propose candidate materials and characterize their behavior, enabling confidence in selection for your application.

We can also assess how the performance and characteristics of materials and products change over time with exposure to their service environment to help determine the suitability of a material for a particular application, as well as its expected lifetime under different service conditions. These predictions can be supported by routine condition monitoring of products returned from service.

CHEMICAL & COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS

Materials Innovation at Avon Protection is a leading organization in the application and interpretation of chemical and compositional analysis. Utilising our extensive experience and well-equipped laboratory, we can work in partnership with you to develop and execute a targeted program to establish the chemistry, composition, and formulation details of a variety of materials, including elastomers and their ingredients, plastics, and recycled materials.

These techniques are vital for effective product development, understanding the effects of operating environments and also in identifying the root causes of in-service failures. Our compound development expertise and extensive test capabilities can then be employed to optimise and verify product performance.

OUR EXPERTS

Our experts' extensive knowledge and innovative research into rubber recycling has delivered ground breaking solutions that broaden the markets for recycled products, as well as increasing the yields, quality and value of rubber pyrolysis processes.
